Studied Physics at the University of Munich and a PhD in Astrophysics at the University of Basel

How did you find the training when you first joined us?

For me, it was really important. I’d been undertaking astrophysics research at university so the induction was invaluable. It lasted around six weeks – the first three were a general introduction to the company, and the other three were a kind of financial boot camp. It was a real kick-start into the world of finance and I met a lot of people. It was great because we all came from different business areas and I don’t necessarily work with them now, but I got to meet them at that initial stage when we were all new and learning. For me, this sector was entirely new, so my first few weeks involved learning all about banking and finance.

What kind of responsibility did you have one month in?

There’s a real culture of learning by doing. After a month, I was able to carry out development for new inflation products, learning what to do and how to do it by being actively involved in every stage of the process.

How would you describe the culture?

The Development Group is made up of around 10 people and we all have very different backgrounds. Not many of us have a financial background which makes the working environment very interesting as we all bring our different knowledge and skills together. Our department has a very collaborative culture; we’re all working towards the same goal and it really is a joint effort. Because you have people from all over Europe as well as around the globe, it really feels like you are part of an international organisation.

What have you learned since you arrived?

I’ve learned a great deal since I arrived, both through formal training and by learning through my day-to-day work. My initial induction taught me a great deal about the world of finance and since then I’ve been learning how things work by really getting involved in projects and actually doing things.

What do you most enjoy about your work?

Developing is never dull – every day is varied and there’s no way to predict what will happen. We get to work on some really important and high profile projects. I’m enjoying my work and I hope to progress quickly to a point where I can have more influence. There are frequently unexpected opportunities, so you never know!

What advice would you give to someone considering a career with us?

There’s a real international focus here, so if you’re already thinking about investment banking, BNP Paribas has a number of advantages. There are lots of opportunities to travel and you’ll meet some outstanding colleagues.
