Introduction to the business area
Corporate and Investment Banking is about calculated, deliberate risk-taking. Banks who can consistently analyse, manage and mitigate risk better than others, will maintain and improve their global standing. BNP Paribas' record in risk management, as confirmed by the AA+ rating and healthy emergence from the sub-prime mortgage crisis, is consistently first class. Ensuring this continues, is the task of Group Risk Management (GRM).
While managing risk is primarily the task of each individual business line, GRM looks after the risk to the BNP Paribas group. Reporting directly to the executive management, GRM calculates and determines the amount of risk that BNP Paribas is exposed to, and then helps the executive management to determine the level of risk the group is prepared to take on, as a whole. GRM offers BNP Paribas:
- A second level of risk control, not involved in day to day business
- Faster, more complete and more objective analysis and reporting of risks that can affect the group
- Ensures reporting and analysis of risk is performed in the same manner and to the same degree of quality, throughout the bank
GRM works as a global entity, independent from each business line, and develops the assessment methods and systems required to perform and report on risk throughout the international network. Our risk specialists are located in the main trading locations of BNP Paribas: New York, London, Paris, Hong Kong and Tokyo with smaller representation in regional offices like Sao Paolo, Rome, Singapore, Taipei, Sydney and Seoul.
