The selection process will vary from country to country and depending on what part of the business and region you apply for. However it will always be a combination of the following stages:
- Online application
- Online tests – there are numerical tests for all graduate and summer intern candidates and verbal tests for long-term internship candidates. You can prepare for a numerical text by visiting http://www.shl.com/TryATest/default.aspx
- Business interview - technical interviews with the hiring managers and/or teams
- Tailored assessment centre
Minimum requirements
There are some minimum requirements that you will need to satisfy. You'll need to have, or be on track to achieve, at least a 2:1 degree (or your country's equivalent) in any subject, although Maths, Economics, Business, Sciences, Engineering and Computer Science are the most relevant. We also have opportunities at Master's, PhD or MBA level in certain countries. A good level of business English is essential for all locations and other languages are an advantage. Over and above this you will need to demonstrate a genuine interest in banking and finance, dedication, intelligence, creativity and client focus. Our business is entirely driven by our clients’ needs and objectives and to be successful you will need to be able to engage with this principle.
Each stage of our selection process is designed to allow you to highlight your potential. To ensure you are fully prepared, we recommend you research our business in as much detail as you can and develop an understanding of the financial and banking world as a whole.
To give you the best chance of success, think about which roles and business areas best suit your experience, qualifications, personal skills and abilities, and highlight this ‘fit’ in your application. Remember, this is a diverse business that hires talented people into real, substantive roles from the outset – you should be comfortable with our culture, engaged with our commitment to our clients, and excited by the prospect of working with a top-tier bank in the fast-moving and challenging world of corporate and investment banking.
If you are applying for a role in another country you should also highlight what you could bring to the role – relevant language skills or knowledge of the local market, links in the area or any specialist expertise that will make you particularly useful to that office. If you think you are the right person for a role in one of our overseas offices, then we encourage you to apply. We value people who are internationally minded and prepared to take on new challenges and responsibilities.
